a bay area man lay in the bushes near this busy freeway ramp for a full week. how he was finally found, still alive. good evening, i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. ktvu's lloyd lacuesta is live near hellyer park in san jose where that man laid for a week, because no one knew he was there. >> reporter: this is where the man was found. let me show you what searchers had to contend with.

it is very, very dark down there. the location is right off the hellyer avenue onramp to highway 101 in south san jose. it is a thicket of brush and trees where thousands of cars drive by every day, but no one stops. san jose police detectives hiked in yesterday, looking for a missing man. >> they found the victim, apparent in an area that was secluded enough with shade, and just completely blocked from all view from anywhere on the roadway. >> reporter: when we last check, michael sanchez of san jose was in critical, but stable condition tonal. police say they got a missing person's report last thursday, and found the chp found his wreck pickup truck empty. >> we had somebody say this guy is mobile. they watched him get out and walk away. >> reporter: the chp wrought in sheriff deputies to help, and

the fire department set up lights, but they found nothing. >> this was a thorough search. it wasn't just 45 minutes of standing around. it was looking around through the brush. >> reporter: a week past before san jose police returned on a hunch, and found sanchez. they say he was unconscious. no food or water for a week, but alive. >> the word is miraculous the fact that this individual survived for seven days. >> reporter: we're told one of the police officers who found sanchez stayed home today, infected with poison ivy. how sanchez survived, we'll have to wait until he recovers and tells his story. lloyd lacuesta, ktvu, channel 2 news. today marks two months since morgan hill teenager sierra lamar went missing. her father released a message today about his 15-year-old daughter. it read in part, my family and i remain positive and confident that she will be back home safe with us. i ask everyone to keep sierra in your hearts, thoughts, and prayers. sierra was last seen by her

mother as she was getting ready for school on march 16. since then, a bag and a cell phone have been found, and police impounded a volkswagen jetta. a father and son from eastern contra costa county are among 19 people in custody tonight after drug enforcement agents busted a million dollar growing operation. >> reporter: late into the afternoon, we watched drug agents carrying items out of a house in the gate the community known as the lakes in discovery bay. the drug enforcement agency revealed it was just part of an investigation that led to 19 arrests, the discovery of 14 indoor marijuana growing operations and a lot more. >> 3600 marijuana plants. 36 firearms, a grenade

launcher. >> in suburbia. >> reporter: they saw authorities move in on several houses. >> it's a gated community. you would never think it's happening in your neighborhood, it's scary. >> reporter: the dea says the investigation began about a year ago . the leaders were steven ortega sr., and steven ortega jr. of discovery bay. after agents searched several houses on this street. several residents told us they had nothing to do with a drug ring. but one man says he's not surprised the investigation led here. >> drug dealing. a lot of people walking around late at night. people that shouldn't be here are in this park, and they're not residents here. >> reporter: we saw agents focus their efforts inside this gated community here today. in discovery bay, eric

rasmussen, ktvu, channel 2 news. more details now. the drug enforcement administration said the ortegas own a business. this is the hayward location. we checked it out today and found it closed up. the other store is in tracy. and it supplied equipment to grow marijuana. drug agents also raided houses about 5:30 this morning. one woman said there was a lot of them. >> they're in front, across the street. they're walking. guns. >> federal agents arrested at least one of the suspects in this neighborhood. they also kicked in the door of one home. some were surprised to hear of allegations of a drug ring operating in their usually quiet neighborhood. quick work of catching three robbery suspects this evening. news channel 2 was overhead.

deputies say the three had natched a woman's purse at -- snatched a woman's purse at the safeway. the woman by the way ended up getting her purse back. new at 10:00, the results of a strike authorization vote by northern california grocery workers. union members at railies, nob hill, and bel-air markets overwhelmingly approved the vote. it involves local 5, united food and commercial workers union. the strike vote had 93% approval. workers say they had been without a contract since last october. a federal mediator has scheduled a meeting for friday. a group of about 50 to 100 people marched today to blame a

pesticide. the protesters say it's responsible for a catastrophic die off of bees around the world. known as cloney collapse disorder. the environmental protection agency says it has no proof the bayer product is to blame. that particular chemical is not made at the berkely facility. in five minutes, a warning about traffic. the massive transportation project that will lead to some street closures. a man was found dead on fall creek road last night. afterward, investigators found pieces of the front end of a mercedes benz and investigators say it is either a 2012 cls63,

motorists more aware, we're helping our safety chances. >> reporter: back here live, richmond spoke told us they givous free helmets to those who need it. they say they're able to do this with the donation of money, and used helmets. amber lie, ktvu, channel 2 news. the estranged wife of robert kennedy jr. was found dead today in her house in new york. there are reports that she committed suicide. according to abc news, mary kennedy hanged herself at her home in bedford, new york. an autopsy is set for tomorrow. mary kennedy was rfk jr.'s second wife. robert kennedy jr. is an attorney. he is the son of senator robert kennedy. the memorial day weekend could bring traffic trouble to san francisco. only on 2 tonight, the construction project that will close one of the city's busiest streets.

ride through downtown san francisco is about to get a lot more busy. heather holmes has details on how work on the transbay center will bring traffic to a halt. >> reporter: the next phase is to excavate first spread. over the memorial day weekend, crews will be installing a temporary bridge to handle traffic. that's part of it right there. the problem, julie, is getting this structure from here to there. that means three days of frustration. it is already slow going near construction of the transbay center. >> this is a disaster. >> it's kind of a nightmare. >> reporter: memorial day weekend, the round the clock work will enter the next phase. >> we'll be excavating this entire footprint here.

>> reporter: leaders with the transbay joint powers authority gave us an exclusive look at plans to install three temporary bridges. along first, fremont, and beale street. >> this is first street we're about to cross. >> reporter: this animation shows what it will look lick, -- like once the work is complete. the bridges will be installed over three different holiday weekends, memorial day, labor day, and veterans day to minimize the impact. >> great. >> reporter: this driver says he will ditch his car and -- >> take bart. >> reporter: the first closure will take effect next friday night at 8:00 p.m., and frank and julie, it will run until tuesday at 5:00 p.m. drivers hoping to get to the bay bridge will be detoured. heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2

news. more details now on two other closures on memorial day weekend. muni plans to shut down it's m judah light rail line may 25 to june 4. more details on ktvu.com. we have posted video of the project in the hot topic section. a fire today at richmond revealed what police are calling a large indoor marijuana farm. it started about 3:30 this morning in a warehouse at the corner of south 6th street and ohio avenue. police estimate more than 1,000 plants were growing inside. some neighbors say they were surprised at what came out of that building. >> boat loads of bags. boat loads of bags and they let a couple of people in and out, but i never, ever suspected it. maybe once or twice we thought we smelled it. >> police say it was a guard

who was sleeping inside the warehouse who reported the fire. officers say she will likely face charges now, as will the owner of the building. investigators say faulty wiring is what probably caused that fire. as investigators were combing through that warehouse, a man was shot to death several blocks away, as he was parking his car. police say the car was still running when at least two gun men walked right up to the car. the shooting happened around 10:00 this morning on 8th street near barrett avenue. police describe the victim as a 27-year-old man. a family member at the scene said the victim has four stepchildren. mitt romney hammered away at barack obama. >> i take exception with what he said, but he went on to say how he measures progress. he said he measures progress by whether people are getting good jobs. well, under this president, they haven't. >> a new fox news poll is not

good news for romney. it shows president obama getting 46% of the vote if the election were held today. and romney with 39%. that's a 7 point drop for the republicans since last month, while the president has held steady. vice president joe biden got fired up today during an appearance in ohio. he said he resented suggestions by republicans that democrats are envious of wealth. >> my father believes or my mother believes if i wanted to be president of the united states, i could be. my mother believes if my mother or sister wanted to be a millionaire, they could be a millionaire. my mother and father dreamed as much as any rich guy dreams. the antioch city planning commission approved changing the name of a downtown street. that might not sound like such

a big deal, but for antioch, it is. ken wayne is there today, and says the city has big aspirations. >> reporter: frank, tourism, and antioch are two words you don't often here in the same sentence. a simple street name change will lure people to discover the hidden gem, it's waterfront. the sun slipped behind the horizon at antioch's marina this evening. >> there's a lot of people, even in this area, that don't realize there's a river here. >> reporter: tonight, the antioch planning commission voted unanimously to recommend a name change. l street would become marina parkway. the change would take place just before caltrans installs new freeway signs on the highway 4 widening project, and potentially let travelers know there's something else in this delta town. >> you will see an offramp that says, marina parkway.

tuberculosis can be spread through the air. high bacterial levels at two beaches are prompting two warnings tonight to stay out of the water. pillar point near mavericks in san mateo county, and the waters at still water beach in monterey county. there are concerns those who swim, wade, or surf in the waters increase their risk for getting ill. the warnings are in effect through friday morning. coming up in 12 minutes, an unusual rescue offshore. the effort to save a horse that swam more than a mile from the beach. the san jose city council could hit owners for underage drinking parties. the social host ordinance allows civil, rather than criminal citations. santa clara county, and nine other bay area cities have

disrupted a meeting of the board of regents in sacramento today. >> about 15 demonstrators kept the board members from going into a closed door session for about 15 minutes around noon. no arrests were made. the protesters say they're outraged the university of california is considering a 6% tuition increase. if the state slashes education funding. san francisco fire chief, joanne hayes wright will have to pay up. a judge ordered the chief to resume payments to her ex- husband. she had been paying him $3,300 a month. she earns about $300,000 a year as fire chief. firefighters say they're having a tough time putting out a fire in arizona that has already destroyed three humans near a historic mining town. the gladiator fire has burned 2,000 acres since it broke out on sunday. so far, the fire is only 5%

contained. the town of crown king was evacuated earlier this week. crews say fighting the fire is especially tough because of the terrain, humidity, and wind gusts. the california science museum in los angeles now says it is halfway to its goal, for permanent exhibit for the space shuttle endeavour. the museum says it has raised half of the $200 million needed for the exhibit. nasa plans to deliver the space shuttle to los angeles in late september. is jennifer lopez calling it quits on "american idol"? what she said on the talk show that has some wondering if this is her last season. >> there is a lot of fog moving in right now, and it's moving into many neighborhoods. i'll show you where it is tomorrow morning, and how long it sticks around. >> how a horse went from being

an arabian horse is recuperates after what was most

likely one of the scariest days of its life. the horse had to be rescued yesterday after it actually swam a mile out to sea. it seems the horse got spooked during a photo shoot and just took off. the owner said the horse had never been to the beach before. rescues say the horse was exhausted, but otherwise was in fairly good shape. new information tonight on the man found slain in a castro valley home earlier this week. the man has been identified as 29-year-old jordan vigil of hayward. the coroner told ktvu, an autopsy has been completed berks you the office still is not releasing the cause of death at the request of investigators. vigil's body was found in the garage of a home on omega street monday night. we're getting late word right now of a shooting in west oakland. here is a live picture of the scene at 43rd and market streets. residents say they heard gunfire just before 10:00. they found a man in the street.

we're told he had been shot in the face and the stomach. he was taken to highland hospital in serious condition. at this point investigators have not identified a suspect. this all happening about 40 minutes ago. in news of the world tonight, in yemen, government forces attacked al-qaeda officials. one of the dead was the brother of a man involved in the bombing of the uss kohl 12 years ago. american troops are helping by districting the assault. in the netherlands, a former bosnian general went on trial for war crimes as the international criminal court. he is charged with 11 counts, including genocide and crimes against humanity during the bosnian war in the 1990s. relatives held up pictures of some of the thousands of people they say he killed. in baghdad, the head of the

iraqi olympic committee met to get the accreditation for iraqi athletes to compete in the upcoming summer games. iraq is sending 30 athletes to compete in swimming, weight lifting and other events. iraq has one medal from 1960 in rome. researchers say that morning cup may be good for you. the research suggests coffee drinkers live longer than those who abstain. the research involved 400,000 people ages 50 to 71: researchers found the risk of dying was about 10% lower for men, and 15% lower for women for anyone who drank 2 cups to 6 cups a day. it seems decaf, or caffeinated does not make a difference. many healthy foods are less expensive than foods that are higher in fat, sugar, or salt.

it counters a perception that it's cheaper to eat junk food than a nutritionally balanced meal. researchers say portions are less expensive than french fries, soft drinks, or ground beef. there are reports tonight that jennifer lopez may not resign for a third year as a judge on "american idol." lopez has been dropping some hints lately. for example yesterday, she appeared on the ellen degeneres show and didn't know if she would continue for another season. this could be a bargaining ploy. lopez didn't sign onto this season until august for a reported $20 million. the natural beauty of an east bay park is facing an ugly future among budget cuts. a graffiti problem for rocks that have been pristine for years. >> reporter: nature has been carving out these sandstone rocks for 50 years. but vandals are defacing them in minutes. this goes along for hundreds of yards. >> it sort of ruins the memory i had of this place. >> frustration, again, disappointment. why is this happening? >> reporter: park rangers showed us what else has been happening. graffiti spray painted on what

should be rock formations. >> how quickly they can be destroyed. >> reporter: because of state budget cuts only five rangers now patrol the entire park. half the number that used to. >> we simply don't have the enforcement. >> reporter: park officials are searching for ecco friendly ways to remove the paint. but rangers say getting rid of the carvings may be next to impossible sand blasting could make the cure worse than the disease. park rangers truly between a rock and a hard place while the natural beauty is getting chipped away. >> it's just kind of upsetting to not be able to see how it was naturally. >> reporter: defacing the park is a misdemeanor. rangers have put up signs asking people not to calve or paint here, hoping that through education, people will leave sculpting to mother nature.

in mount diablo state park, ktvu, channel 2 news. friday at 5:00, we investigate the challenge of trying to keep people away from a closed beach. or a closed park. that's coming up friday at 5:00. santa clairey county -- santa clara county officials are going to find out if they're moving hundreds of coffins from a medical site. workers unearthed coffins in late february from the late 18 and early 1900s. if the county gets permission, an archeologist will be hired, a understand attempt will be made to notify a next of kin. the water off san mateo county is a hot spot for wind surfing.

fog is pushing into many inland bay valleys right now. you can see the cool temperatures here in san francisco, and oakland. so the fog is all in this area now, pushing eastward. but towards concord, the fog will be there in the next few minutes. winds gusting to 22. that fog is going to have a huge impact in the inland bay valleys tomorrow morning. and in the inland bay. a cooler day tomorrow. clouds for basically everybody tomorrow morning. maybe south san jose, you will get a little bit of a break. but most of the bay area, cloud cover when you wake up. temperatures on the cool side, mostly in the 50s, and low 50s. the forecast as we go through tonight then, clouds pushing inland. that's what's happening now. tomorrow, interestingly enough, i showed you this earlier. the weather system that allowed the fog to push in tonight is going to get rid of the inversion. the fog goes away tomorrow afternoon. we should see more sunshine tomorrow afternoon despite the
